PSAT Testing Essentials

Understand the PSAT suite (PSAT/NMSQT, PSAT 10, PSAT 8/9), its connection to the SAT, National Merit Scholarships, and how to prepare effectively.

What is the PSAT Suite?

The PSAT suite includes tests that measure skills needed for college and career readiness, aligned with the SAT.

Key Tests:

  • PSAT/NMSQT: Primarily for 11th graders (also 10th). Qualifying test for National Merit Scholarship Program.
  • PSAT 10: For 10th graders, same content as PSAT/NMSQT but taken in the spring.
  • PSAT 8/9: For 8th and 9th graders, establishes a baseline for college readiness.

Provides practice for the SAT and feedback on strengths/weaknesses.

National Merit Program

The PSAT/NMSQT taken in 11th grade is the entry point for the National Merit Scholarship Program.

Significance:

  • High scores can lead to recognition (Commended, Semifinalist, Finalist).
  • Finalists compete for significant scholarships from NMSC, corporations, and colleges.
  • Requires meeting specific eligibility criteria beyond test scores.

Registration & Dates

Registration for the PSAT/NMSQT and PSAT 10 is typically handled through schools. Homeschooled students register directly with participating local schools.

Timeline:

  • PSAT/NMSQT: Offered primarily in October. Schools set registration deadlines.
  • PSAT 10: Offered between February and April.
  • PSAT 8/9: Offered between September and April.
  • Contact your school counselor or local high schools early (especially homeschoolers).

Digital Test Structure

The PSAT suite is now administered digitally via the College Board's Bluebook™ application.

Sections:

  • Reading and Writing Module 1 & 2: Assesses comprehension, analysis, expression, and conventions. Adaptive format.
  • Math Module 1 & 2: Covers Algebra, Advanced Math, Problem-Solving/Data Analysis, Geometry/Trigonometry. Adaptive format. Calculator allowed throughout.

Total testing time is approximately 2 hours and 14 minutes. The adaptive nature means performance on Module 1 affects the difficulty of Module 2.

Understanding Scores

Scores provide insight into college readiness and areas for improvement, plus the NMSQT Selection Index for scholarship eligibility.

Score Components:

  • Total Score: PSAT/NMSQT & PSAT 10 (320-1520), PSAT 8/9 (240-1440).
  • Section Scores: Reading & Writing, Math.
  • Percentiles: Compare your performance to other students.
  • NMSQT Selection Index (PSAT/NMSQT): Used for National Merit Program screening (Range: 48-228).
